Vanuatu has been hit by another earthquake after hundreds of Australians landed on home soil from the islands and the federal government announced a new round of financial assistance. The latest magnitude 6.1 quake shook buildings on the country’s main island at 2.30am on Sunday after it struck 30km west of the capital, Port Vila.

Commercial flights had been set to resume on Sunday before a new earthquake struck the island nation. Aid efforts remained strained because of the difficulty accessing the Pacific island.

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit Vanuatu on Tuesday, December 17 that has destroyed buildings across the capital of Port Vila with 14 confirmed deaths and more expected as recovery efforts get underway.
