The rebels are largely the most conservative lawmakers who are passionate about slashing spending and debt. They hail from deep-red districts where a primary challenge is less of a danger.

Thirty-four House Republicans voted Friday against against a spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown, while no Democrats opposed the legislation.

After a week of turmoil, Congress dodged a government shutdown by approving a spending package that would continue government funding until mid-March and provide additional relief for natural disaster survivors as well as aid to farmers.
